Godzilla vs. Kong, commonly known as "Apex" is a 2021 American science fiction monster film directed by Legendary Pictures. It is the fourth installment in the MonsterVerse, after 2019's Godzilla: King of the Monsters. It serves as a sequel to both King of the Monsters and Kong: Skull Island.

A cinematic sequel is in the works.

Godzilla vs. Kong pits two legendary foes against one other, with the fate of the Earth at risk. Kong and his guards arrive at Jia, a small orphaned child with whom Kong has formed an unbreakable bond of love and devotion, after a perilous journey. They find themselves in the path of an enraged Godzilla. It's only the beginning of the mystery that lies deep inside the Earth's core.

In 2024, five years after Godzilla and Ghidorah fought and killed each other for power, Godzilla and Kong are still the only Titans on Earth. Skull Island's climate has become unstable because of a storm caused by Ghidorah and the storm cell that surrounds the island. Monarch had to keep Kong inside a dome-shaped facility that simulated the island's environment, with an orphaned young Iwi girl named Jia, who is deaf and can communicate with Kong through sign language, as his company.

Meanwhile, Bernie Hayes, an employee of the Apex Cybernetics business and presenter of the Titan Truth Podcast, exfiltrates material indicating evil activity at an Apex facility in Pensacola, but as he finishes downloading the data, Godzilla appears and strikes unexpectedly. Bernie finds a bizarre piece of equipment like a huge robotic eye amid the facility's debris during Godzilla's assault.

Impressed with Godzilla's ability to save mankind, the populace turned against him following the assault. An adult listener of Bernie's show, Madison Russell, is frightened about the latest Godzilla assault on her school. When she attempts to reason with her widower father Mark (who is also the Monarch's director) about the source of Godzilla's rampage, he ignores all she says, saying merely that animals may change like humans. Soon after, Madison enlists the aid of her closest friend Josh Valentine to uncover the mysteries of Apex and the man behind Godzilla's rampage

Nathan, Ilene, Jia, and an Apex crew lead by Walter's daughter Maia board a customized barge with Kong bound to prevent him from escaping. Kong grows restless and upset one rainy night, and begins to tug on the shackles that bind him, but Jia calms him down by allowing her and Kong to touch fingers in solidarity as Kong signs the word "home" much to Ilene's surprise. The following day, Ilene tells Nathan about how she raised Jia as her adopted daughter when violent and unpredictable storms killed most of the Iwi and their parents. Jia was the sole survivor since Kong was the one who protected her, which led to the two creating a relationship.

At this moment, Jia detects Godzilla's arrival by detecting vibrations throughout the ship as the Titan approaches and assaults the troops before capsizing the barge, almost drowning Kong and the others on board. Fortunately, Nathan frees Kong by releasing him from his shackles, enabling him to fight Godzilla beneath long enough to swim to the surface and tip the barge back on its head, sparing the passengers from drowning. Kong gets onboard a neighboring aircraft carrier to confront Godzilla, who climbs aboard to confront Kong. The two Titans trade vicious punches until fighter aircraft distract Godzilla enough for Kong to force him back into the sea. Godzilla unleashes his atomic breath from under the carrier, but Kong leaps to avoid the explosion, only for Godzilla to wrap his tail around Kong and take him into the depths of the ocean, aiming to drown the Titan.

Because of the cold, they can't bring Kong back to Skull Island, but Nathan wonders aloud whether he'll go down the tube if he knows there are others just like him. Ilene advises Jia to inquire with Kong about whether or not he has relatives in the area.

Madison and Josh track down Bernie, who recognizes Madison as Mark's daughter and agrees to help them with their investigation. They arrive to Apex headquarters to find that the "eye" Bernie described earlier has disappeared. The group sealed and transported Skullcrawler eggs by mistake while carrying them to Hong Kong through an underground tunnel.

Walter plans to use the energy of the Hollow Earth to overcome Mechagodzilla's restrictions, it is revealed later. Madison then understands that Mechagodzilla is the reason Godzilla attacked in the first place: Apex is attempting to replace him and all of the Titans in order for humans to become the Earth's apex species. Madison and the others stumble upon a room where Ren is sitting inside Ghidorah's severed head, which has been turned into a biological supercomputer and cockpit for Ren to control Mechagodzilla through radio waves after Apex acquired it from Alan Jonah after it was bitten off by Godzilla during his battle against Ghidorah five years ago.

Ilene, Nathan, and Jia follow in their HEAV, a hole created by Godzilla's atomic breath. Kong accepts the challenge and starts his journey to Hong Kong with his axe. Godzilla's atomic breath is halted when Kong shoves his axe down his throat in Hong Kong, gaining the upper hand and preventing him from unleashing it. Godzilla removes and discards Kong's axe, which he uses to stab Kong in the thigh. In the second bout of Godzilla vs Kong, Kong retrieves his axe and brings it down on Godzilla, generating an explosion that forces both Titans back, giving Nathan the idea that Kong had triumphed.

Walter instructs Ren to send out Mechagodzilla to slay Godzilla back at the Apex headquarters. Despite Ren's warnings not to use the new Hollow Earth energy source without first testing it, Walter dismisses Ren's pleas and tells him to activate the mecha. At the same time, security apprehends Bernie, Madison, and Josh for penetrating Apex headquarters and transports them to Walter. Madison blames Walter of inciting Godzilla to war and caused all of this to begin with, yet he boldly responds that he took responsibility for allowing humans to fight back against Godzilla and the Titans.

While Josh and Bernie try unsuccessfully to deactivate the rampaging robot remotely and Madison tries to summon Mark for assistance, Godzilla and Mechagodzilla battle. At one point, both fire their energy beams at each other, which lock together, only for Mechagodzilla to gain the upper hand, knocking Godzilla over and burning him. While Mechagodzilla proceeds to overrun and seriously beat Godzilla, Nathan, Ilene, and Jia approach an unconscious Kong, where Jia detects a slowing of his pulse. Ilene explains that they are unable to produce a charge large enough to restart Kong's heart, but Nathan, recalling Maia's earlier statement about the HEAVs producing a charge large enough to power Las Vegas for a week, flies the remaining HEAV onto Kong's chest and sets it to self-destruct, detonating the craft and releasing a massive electrical charge that instantly revives Kong.

The two Titans join forces to turn the tide, but the robot outperforms them. Kong takes aim at Mechagodzilla with his axe, but his weapon has lost its charge, and the robot attempts to impale Kong with its tail drill, but Kong survives. Recognizing that he and the others can do nothing to help Kong and Godzilla, Bernie pulls out a flask of liquor and proposes they all drink. But, having had an epiphany, Josh snatches Bernie's flask and spills the contents all over Mechagodzilla's control panel, prompting Mechagodzilla to halt and Godzilla and Kong to reclaim the upper hand.

The atomic breath of Godzilla powers up Kong's axe as soon as he sees him wield it, enabling Kong to dismember Mechagodzilla and remove its head before raising his trophy in victory and taking a seat to relax.

As soon as Madison sees Mark again, she invites him into her program so that he may talk about the Roswell Monarch facility with Josh and Bernie. Godzilla attacks Kong, causing the Titan to grab his axe and resume the fight. Despite Godzilla's reluctance to strike, Kong remains calm. As a result, the battle between Kong's species and Godzilla's is over. We see Godzilla return to the water peacefully with Kong following him, while everyone else looks on.
